Data Security Vendors Introduce Products And Partnerships
By Beth Davis

At this week's RSA Data Security Conference in San Francisco, Security Dynamics Technologies unveiled a new security platform, called SecurSight, that integrates its ACE/Server security software and ID tokens with encryption and digital certificate technology.

As many as 30 vendors are using the conference to present their latest wares in information security, covering everything from firewalls to digital certificate technology. Many announcements centered around partnerships, an indication of the ongoing product integration in an effort to deliver enterprisewide security systems.

Security Dynamics gained its latest encryption and digital certificate tools when it acquired RSA Data Security. It also recently acquired single sign-on software from DynaSoft AB and technology from VeriSign.

The platform -- similar in approach to enterprise management platforms from Computer Associates and IBM/Tivoli -- consists of modular products that tackle secure remote access, desktop security, secure e-mail, single sign-on, and intranet/extranet security.

Security Dynamics, RSA, and IBM expanded their partnership, pledging to support a new specification from the Open Group that outlines application programming interfaces so application developers can map their applications to a variety of security services, such as encryption.

IBM enhanced its Global Sign-On software: users of Tivoli TME 10 can now manage Global Sign-On functions via TME 10. The software also supports Lotus Notes, PeopleSoft, and OS/400 applications as well as Windows NT and Solaris servers and Windows 95 clients.

Symantec and certificate authority software provider Entrust Technologies unveiled a joint development agreement that will enable customers of Symantec utilities to use Entrust digital certificates for access and user authentication.

VeriSign launched four software modules that let enterprises run part of the company's digital certificate authority functions on site. Until now, VeriSign offered only services, maintaining the certificate authority functions at its site.

The new modules are: Automated Authentication Manager, a tool kit that lets IT managers integrate certificate authentication with legacy applications and databases; Automated Lifecycle Manager, which automates certificate revocation, renewal, and directory services; Secure Server Manager, which centralizes management of digital certificates to secure Web servers; and Smart Card/Key Manager, which allows use of smart cards as part of digital certificate implementation.
