Some Universities Now Offering MBAs in E-Commerce

[November 5] A number of Vanderbilt University students will soon be among the first wave of graduates to enter the business world as degree-carrying specialists in electronic commerce.

For decades, business schools have prepared their students for a corporate world that was organized around function-defined departments, leading to concentrations in finance, management, marketing, production, accounting, human resources, and so on.

But the Internet is changing or even eliminating these old organizational schemes, the New York Times said.

And Vanderbilt is not alone. A growing number of universities and graduate schools are creating curriculums to reflect these changes. Some, like the Owen School of Management at Vanderbilt University in Nashville, TN, and the University of Texas at Austin, are emerging as premier study centers for electronic commerce.

Others in this new field, according to the Times, include the Fuqua School of Business at Duke University, Harvard College, the Sloan School at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Stanford University, the University of Michigan, and the University of Rochester.

"It sells management short to say that the Internet is just another tool," said Donna L. Hoffman, an associate professor in the Owen School at Vanderbilt. "What we teach here is that this is a revolution. And it's very important to understand how the unique elements of this interactive medium can be used to devise new ways of competing and new strategies."
