Nearly 80% of companies studied from May to September experienced at least one major network attack per month, with 100% experiencing heavy probing (queries to servers or server applications for sensitive network or server information) or reconnaissance from a third-party site, according to the results of a survey commissioned by NetSolve Inc., Austin, Texas.
The survey is based on data collected from customers' networks using NetSolve's ProWatch Secure remote network security monitoring service.
Data collected from the customer sites showed that serious attacks (when a user is attempting to gain unauthorized access to sensitive information with a likelihood of malicious intent) occur up to five times per month for customers with high visibility on the Internet, with most of those attacks related to electronic commerce.
Of all the Web attacks detected, 100% were targeted at e-commerce sites and 72% originated from sites outside the United States.
