So, where can you get products with the new SET, S/MIME and IPsec protocols built into them?
Big-name vendors like IBM already are shipping SET software, and RSA Data Security Inc. offers a SET developer tool kit.
IBM sells its CommercePoint family of SET software, which includes electronic wallet, certification authority and Internet gateway software. Others, like Actra, owned by Netscape Communications and OpenMarket Inc., plan to ship SET server software sometime next year. CyberCash Inc. and VeriFone Inc. also are expected to ship SET wallet software in 1998.
On the digital certificate side, GTE Corp.'s CyberTrust SET certification authority service will be commercially ready next year, and VeriSign Inc. today runs one based on the initial SET Version 0.0 spec. Entrust Technologies Inc. recently added SET to its Entrust/Manager certification authority software.
Meanwhile, Microsoft's Merchant Server and Microsoft Wallet software already support any third-party SET software, says Karan Khanna, product manager for the Windows NT Server team at Microsoft.
As for S/MIME, the protocol can be found in Netscape Communicator, but Microsoft, Lotus Development and Novell all have plans to deliver S/MIME products. Most IPsec products are still in test mode.
