AmEx to Offer One-Stop Online Shopping System

[October 22] American Express announced it joined with Mercantec to develop an all-inclusive electronic commerce solution.
By licensing Mercantec's SoftCart e-commerce software and integrating the product with its payment system, American Express will begin offering businesses the framework for setting up a virtual shopping center. The system will contain all the tools necessary for commerce-enabling a Web site.
The American Express SoftCart solution will feature real-time credit and bank card authorization, as well as support for the Secure Socket Layer (SSL) protocol. Future versions will include support for the Secure Electronic Transaction (SET) protocol.
Consumers will be able to license the system for a one-time fee of $1,800, with monthly license fees also available. The product is now available on a limited basis, with plans for wide distribution early 1998.
